Sumayyah Muhammad

Sumayyah’s work explores the richness and celebration of Black identity, the beauty of our resilience, and the narratives that shape how Black women are seen and see themselves. Rooted in the traditions of contemporary portraiture, black aesthetics, and hip-hop culture, her art amplifies the presence of Black women as subjects of power, beauty, and confidence. She draws inspiration from music, fashion, and the ever-evolving language of pop culture, remixing familiar imagery to reimagine Black womanhood on our own terms. Using bold colors, expressive forms, and intricate textures and materials to engage viewers in the ways in which Black culture shapes the world.
